...shut up and eat.
One more day left of the work week!!! I am guiltily reporting that I have not at all been faithful to the gym lately. 3 days a week has been about the average. I've gone 3 days so far this week, and I won't be surprised if by the end of the day tomorrow I say "fuck it" and not go. It's just not easy to motivate oneself when your morale and energy level is so low. I packed my gym bag for tomorrow..... Yesterday, myself and my two other desk co-workers were SO frustrated with the fucking shelter and the bullshit that we constantly endure- that all three of us went to lunch together to a) get the hell out, and b) to vent. We're all tired of the crap. It was bad enough yesterday that I was surfing the net between adoptions (my station that day) looking at jobs. I was only able to apply for one. Then last night after I got home from the gym and looking forward to watching Supernatural, the only other tv show besides Hell's Kitchen that I watch faithfully, I discover that Sway one of my ratties didn't look well. Shit. She was drooling (not something rats do), not moving right for her, and every once in a while she'd tense up, almost like a seizure. I got the rat health guide out that I bought last weekend and looked up her symptoms. It read: drooling- bad taste in mouth, choking or respiratory distress. I assumed that because she's three years and 2 months that the last item was the case since in addition to everything else she was breathing heavy. I tried using my inhaler (yes, you can use them on rats), and even some "vicks" type rub. It seemed to help the breathing but there was no change in these "seizures". I braced myself for an emergency office visit if need be. But when I called the local emergency vet- they had no "exotic" vet on staff last night. HOWEVER, this lady that wrote this book, that I so wrongly criticized for her presentation last weekend (it was still bad but I should be more respectful)- she has her phone number printed and says that you can call with rat emergencies up to 11pm. Bless her. I called- left a message. She called me back within a half hour and said simply, "Your rat is choking'. By that time thankfully, Sway was eating yogurt and seemed loads better- but I know she was right and it gave me peace of mind. With what few details I gave her on the message she knew. That book was the best $7 investment I've ever made- and I would have gladly paid more for it- because it's priceless. Now I know what to do when something happens again and my vet is closed. Trust the book. Call the Rat Lady if it's not in there. Crisis averted I still felt like I got no sleep when my alarm clock went off this morning. It was still dark! One of a few things I don't like about the coming winter season. Because the foster parents have given up, 12 rabbits are at the shelter now, with 19 still in foster care. I don't blame them for giving up. 4 months of fostering a rabbit would drive me crazy. They are not easy creatures. Thankfully one more has gone to a permanent home today. I adopted out one of our many white rabbits called Californians. "Fun" fact: in shelters black dogs and black cats are the last ones to find homes- similarly, white rabbits, especially those with red eyes (and ALL of our Californians have red eyes of course) are the last rabbits to find homes. Yay. We also have 7 Russian Dwarf and 1 Robo hamster at the shelter. I can't remember how many are in foster care. Those get adopted pretty slowly too. My old foster rattie, Rosie was dropped off this week by the foster dad because she was in desperate need of a teeth trimming. I am so proud of myself, with the help of another staff member (she held her down), I successfully trimmed her teeth pretty quickly and totally painless. At least, she didn't squeak or squeal, so I'm guessing painlessly. Every time I do that, I'm saving her life essentially. I am on book six of Unfortunate Events and hopefully I'll finish that before Sunday ends. I'm aiming for by the end of Saturday but I won't get my hopes up. I have a 40% off coupon from Borders you bet your ass I'm going to use it, probably on the new Charlaine Harris book. There is a tickle in my throat. I've coughed a bit. I'm dreading that turning into anything more. I drank two cups of green tea and took an herbal immunity booster, hoping to squash it before it ruins my trip to AZ, again. My mom bought me Coraline for my birthday and I still haven't watched it! I also have S. Darko the sequel to Donnie Darko (one of my favorite movies of ALL time) that I haven't watched either! I need to do that.
