Menu du jour:
Sway's Second Surgery

Yesterday was Sway's second surgery in as many months. I was so worried for her I almost changed my mind on her even having the surgery after dropping her off in the morning.

I told the lady at the desk that I think I feel another growth in the same area he removed one previous other than the obvious one, and that if he found one he had full permission to remove whatever he saw.

I got no phone call from them during the day- which is supposed to be good news. I arranged to take a short lunch and leave a half hour early. Stopped to get gas so I wouldn't have to stop with Sway in the car on the way home. Always try to think of their comfort first. So glad I did.

I got to the vet's office and paid for her surgery plus antibiotics for Switch since she's still having symptoms. (70 bucks- really not bad) The doc was in the lobby consulting with another customer and after he came to me and said that they did find another growth, and also reopened a section from last time because it wasn't healed all the way (the others are), so he opened it to clean it out and cut away some bad stuff and closed it again. So three incisions this time as well.

They took a lot longer than last time to get her to me. I could see her carrier through a door window and was concerned. I think I waited 15-20 minutes. When they finally brought her out the tech explained she had some oozing so they cleaned her up and that she was awfully cold and needed a heating pad or something to warm her up. Which unfortunately I don't have. The tech sent me home with an IV bag they heat in the microwave for warming purposes. I got Sway in the car and turned on the heat eventhough it was warm outside.

I got her home, turned up my ceramic heater to 75 degrees and wrapped her in a blanket and held her for over an hour, trying to get her little iceberg body back to regular temps. Eventually she started squirming more, indicating she was warming up, and so I was comfortable enough to set her up in the large cat crate I brought home from the shelter with some warm blankets near the heater. She ate enough last night to satisfy me and slept the rest of the evening even when I got Switch and Slink later for their regular playtime.

Yesterday at work I did something stupid. I was sitting on my foot at the desk. When I got up I actually fell over due to the fact that my foot was so dead, that I didn't even have "pins and needles". I tried to get up twice and fell again both times, like a moron. I was fine after I got feeling back in my foot until I got to the vet. That's when it started to hurt. Uh oh. So when I got home with Sway I was icing my foot while holding her. I didn't stop it in time, damage was done. My foot is swollen now, and I called off work today because of it. Which is ok, because I was feeling guilty about leaving Sway today. I've been icing it all day and it's still not too functional, but I'll have to go to work despite it tomorrow. Good thing most of my day is spent sitting down. Foot up would be better, but that won't be feasible. I don't think it's twisted or fractured, just sore and swollen, so hopefully it will be back by the end of my days off this week.

Sway was still lethargic today, so I just kept checking on her, icing my foot, taking a nap. The vet's office called and asked about her, I explained what she was like and they said she'll be more herself tomorrow. I'm thinking that's right. Her recovery time from the anesthesia is taking longer this time, but she is such a tough little rattie, I am so proud of her.
