A Hit & Run & An Artichoke

....so the day started out exciting and ended with a pffffft.

Overall it really wasn't all that bad I guess. It was just very nice not to have to be at work today. i got up at 7am to let Galaxie out of her crate and had planned on going back to bed, but I was awake enough to stay up, so I did. Fed the ratties and hammies, made sure the cats were set up for the day, and sat down to a bowl of cereal. Shortly after finishing I heard the screeching sounds of tires spinning and then all too familiar pop. Someone had hit something. I ran to the balcony windows and watched as a white smart car shaped car pulled away from a car parked across the street and sped off like a bat out of hell.

A number of neighbors came out of their houses and converged on the offended party. Amazingly there was little visible damage to the gold toyota camry. The excitement ended and we all went back inside. Then the cops showed presumably to take a report- which I know does little good on a case where if you didn't know what kind of car, the license plate AND know what the person looked like driving it you're screwed (cause it happened to me). But it's good for insurance purposes if you planned on making a claim on the uninsured motorists I guess.

I watched from our balcony as the two cop cars (that I could see) and cops conversed with the neighbors about what happened. I have a really decent view of the neighborhood behind us, I can see a park a block away. I watched as a white smart car shaped vehicle (a toyota scion) pulled up to the stop sign and thought, there is NO way that could be it. I watched as it turned left and then down the street the cops were on, and it slowly passed by until a cop spotted him and yelled, "STOP!!" The guy floored it and I watched it turn left down another street and then right down another. The cop who yelled ran to his car in the meantime and sped off, engine gunning, tires squealing, and I watched in potential horror as he went straight instead of turning right down the street he went- however I knew the cop could still have a chance if the guy was going to try to make it to the main road. The second cop car sped off and turned right- down the correct road and apparently there was a third cop car that I couldn't see from where I stood that flipped a U and went down the road the camry was on- which essentially had all the guy's escape routes covered.

We waited for a little while (sister joined me by this time since I ran to her room and told her about the excitement) with the neighbors but they didn't come back, so we went back inside. Sis and I were unsatisfied with that outcome so we went to Roger and started to drive off to find out if they'd caught him. We didn't even have to leave the parking lot. A cop showed up to tell the neighbor they'd caught the guy. They caught him down that middle road, apparently he thought parking and pretending he just got in his car was a good idea. Can you guess that he was "intoxicated"? Duh. And so we talked to him about what I had seen from beginning to end. He took my info and said some cops would come to make a report and they'd probably want to talk to me.

They did come back but apparently they were not told I was a witness because they were going to leave after talking to the neighbor (gee you mean communication is bad at their job too??). It's a good thing I went out there on my own. I think I was the only one to witness the car at all when the accident happened. Let alone the view of the chase. So I gave them my account, I thanked them for catching the guy, and they went on their way. Exciting morning. To think I would have been at work when it all went down.

I took Switch to the vet after that. Sis went with. The doc says she's not sick (thank goodness) that she may be experiencing allergies (like her human mommy). So he gave her a cortizone shot (steroid), said that should relieve her symptoms for the next few days and that after that time I should start trying to eliminate possible irritants. Is the next step getting an air purifier for them?? Heh. I'll for sure be known as the crazy rat lady soon.

We picked up sis's husband after that from work and stopped by the house to drop off the "kids" (of course I take all three ratties to the vet so nobody stresses out).

We went to the flea market/farmer's market where I picked up my sister a case for her camera (part of her b-day present besides the dinner I bought her last night), a black and a purple handkerchief for my hair, a bottle of my favorite car wax, and an artichoke. Went to Round Table for lunch. Went to Border's for the fourth book in the Incarnations of Immortality series I've been reading. Went home for a bit and then went very begrudgingly to the 'rents house for my sister's b-day dinner.

I am now broke! I negotiated this week with the chiropractor I've been paying since 2003 on the treatment I was given for the accident that occurred April Fool's day of that year. $35 a month consistently since then. I had sent a letter because I hadn't received a statement for over a year on the account and told them I refused to pay until that came to me. That was like, two or more months ago and I stopped paying in october (I put post its on a number of checks I sent politely requesting a statement even before I sent a letter- to no avail). Finally their account manager called me (she was on maternity leave) and told me I have a bit over 500 left on the account. I told her I'd give them $300 to pay off the account and close it. She asked the doc and he agreed. The check went out today (with "account paid in full as per agreed" in the memo line). I am grateful to have that small, but annoying monkey finally off my back.

It cost me 40 to take Switch to the vet. But that's a necessity as far as I'm concerned. I took my sis out to a $50 dinner last night. Spent $40 over the course of this day. Paid rent/utilities, my phone bill, one of my credit card bills. So now really, besides gas and maybe a few other things I'm broke until the 15th. Yay for me.

However, my debts are really starting to disappear. My computer will definitely be paid off before the 0% is up in October, I hope to be under $2k on my only major credit debt remaining by the end of the year. Hopefully well under, if things go right.

Oh hell. I just remembered my registration for Roger is due in May. Argh!!!!

The image of a hamster in a wheel comes to mind.
