...shut up and eat.
Week after miserable week at work. It is very much like Groundhog Day without the fun parts. This week several older cats were surrendered because essentially, people "couldn't be bothered" with them anymore. Today was a 17 year old cat. Someone wanted to surrender a chinchilla they had for 3 years because the kid whose pet it is has "gotten older" (we're talking 13-14) and -exact words- has become a nuisance to have to take care of it. Even then they didn't want to have to pay the 50 bucks to surrender the animal. The ultimate in laziness folks. Sad part is, the animal is probably going to suffer for it. I've experienced that when kids get tired of taking care of an animal the parent very rarely does what needs to be done for the animal- so they come in often sick, in bad shape, emaciated, or poor nutrition, incorrect living conditions or hell- all of the above. Two unaltered (not neutered), crop eared, male pits were surrendered today because their owner is in prison. Nice? They put on quite the aggressive display in the lobby to the point where staff had to block the doors so no one else could come in. Very tense moment. You can bet your bottom dollar that those dogs aren't going to be with us on earth for very much longer. It's a shame, but we simply can't perpetuate the already bad reputation that these poor dogs have. The city planner came in to have a private creamation done on his toy pug who died. He was the most pleasant person I dealt with all day, even shaking my hand at the beginning of our conversation. As pleasant as he was there was no relief there, with a 12yr old dead pug and his partner's (he's apparently gay) father on his death bed as well. The only good thing that happened was one of the ACOs (animal control officers) was behind me when I was explaining to a lady who was debating over whether or not to turn in a stray beagle she found because she did not think the rescue that the dog was microchipped to should have the dog back- that she had no legal right to a stray animal we may both agree that the rescue it belonged to was wrong, however we must make a concerted effort to return animals to their owners especially in cases where we know there is an owner. The ACO said, when the lady left, having turned over the dog, that I handle people really well. That she knew what I must be struggling with inside, but that I didn't show it a bit on the outside. At least somebody notices. People wonder why I'm negative and don't talk a lot. I don't have enough days off.
